What is 'drips' or IV line ?
Needle (Drips)
A needle will be used to put a thin plastic tube (a ‘cannula’) into a vein in the back of your hand or arm. This is taped down to stop it slipping out. Sometimes, it can take more than one attempt to insert the cannula.
Usually a cold spray or local anaesthetic is used to numb the area before attempting one.
Bags of sterile water with added salt or sugar is given through a drip into it.
The needle is also used to give you drugs for anaesthesia or sedation, fluids to keep you hydrated and blood if required.
